6 great ways to make your new house a home
Thursday, 17 January 2019 08:44

Hey guys! I am back! Previously, I talked about the things you need to consider when house-hunting. Today, I am going to talk about what happens after you’ve gotten the perfect house. The good news is that you don’t have to have a degree in interior design or have lots of cash to turn your house into a home.

I have selected 6 key ways to help you turn your new house into a warm, comfortable home, quickly.

  • Start with the closet.
Living well must begin with you. Whilst most people start unpacking the common spaces first, focus your efforts on your wardrobes and bedroom. This is because it is likely to be the room that you will use the most to begin with, and you want to make sure it is decluttered and comfortable, right from the beginning.

  • Decorate with what you love

Once you do start to unpack and arrange the rest of the rooms, be sure to decorate with what you love. Use items and colours that represent our personality, and that you will not tire of easily and layer them in the different rooms so that your whole house has a unified feel.

  • A touch of the familiar

Use items that remind you of “home” all around your house. Be it a comforter, a clock, a lampshade…whatever reads “home” to you should be used all through your new house to conjure the feeling of familiarity and settled-ness.

  • Mimic your regular routine.

As soon as you move in, create a space where everyone could drop their keys, bags, and coats. Use the same hooks and bins that you used before for familiarity. Your routine shouldn't have to change just because your location does. Routine is comforting and gives a feeling of home.

  • Make it smell nice.

For a house to feel like home, you need good new smells to make it feel like home. From flowers in the living room, to pot-pourri in the bathrooms, to scented candles in the bedroom, aromatherapy relaxes the atmosphere and makes it feel warm and welcoming.

  • Don't order pizza.

For most people, home is a homemade meal: Always unpack the kitchen after the bedroom so that you can cook a simple meal to enjoy. Even if you're living among boxes, eating a simple recipe on the floor is worth it. It warms the house and makes it smell good. It is also comforting to be able to eat in one’s home.
